Home / 100 Years of Scouting
The Boy Scouts of America turned 100 years old on February 8, 2010. That huge milestone will be celebrated throughout the Nation from September 1, 2009, through December 31, 2010
Scouting is a way of life. Because of that way of life, the Boy Scouts of America has a rich history, a thriving and vital community today, and a vision and mission that will carry us into the future. Beginning in September 2009 and throughout 2010 we are celebrating this way of life. We are celebrating the character and integrity of America’s youth. We are celebrating the adventure and continuing the journey. Along our path, we can be proud of the contributions Scouting has made to this great country.
Hitting the hundred year mark is a great achievement for many reasons, but the one that is most telling is perhaps the most obvious. We’re doing something right. The principles we were founded on 100 years ago are the same principles we live by today: leadership, character, service, environmental stewardship, and achievement. A century living these principles is surely a century worth celebrating. We’re successful because we abide by the Scout Law, which guides us in living a life of honor. Our law teaches us to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
The Coastal Empire Council’s 100th Anniversary Committee has been hard at work planning our Centennial Celebration. We have planned four major events and a Religious Awards program. The four events, to be held in different locales throughout the council, will be council-wide events. There will be a four-part commemorative patch, one part presented to participants of the four events to make a complete patch that will be cherished by all. The four events are:
SCOUT EXPO: October23-25, 2009, at the National Guard Armory on Eisenhower Avenue in Savannah. Theme: “Scouting is International.” The chair of the event was Pete Mastopoulos, Council Commissioner.
SCOUT FEST: March 19-21, 2010 at Taro DZ on Fort Stewart. Theme: “Duty to Country.” The chair of the event was Steve George of Troop 486 in Richmond Hill.
The1st Annual Cub Scout Freeze-out was held at the Scout Fest, and was chaired by Rick Seagroves of Pack 295 in Guyton.
SCOUT JAMBORAMA: April 30–May 3, 2010, at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds on Rte. 67 in Statesboro. Theme: “Good Turns for the Community.
The Cuborama was held during the Scout Jamborama and was chaired by Lonnie Dombrowsky of Pack and Troop 141 in Pembroke.
SCOUT REUNION: August 13-15, 2010, at the Memorial Stadium in Savannah. Theme: “Be Prepared for the Future.” The chair of the event is Ed Farrell.
100 RELIGIOUS AWARDS FOR 100 YEARS will be an on-going program throughout the celebration with a goal of Scouts (CS, BS, and VS) and Scouters earning their religious awards. Theme: “Duty to God.” The chair of the event is Rev. Sam Watkins.
If anyone has pictures from the first three events, please send them to Beth at bdemaria@scouting.org.
